CATUBBA by MEDIA AETAS:
Media Aetas begins performing in 1995 at the Taormina Festival under the Direction of, Roberto De Simone. The Group, ever since its debut, has always performed a repertoire of music that findsitsinspiration in popular and folkloristic dances. Media Aetas has drawn on this experience to create a new kind of sonority that blends together jazz, blues and popular rhythms from the south of Italy. The result is a modern rhythm that will not fail to ravish the spectator into a whirlpool of passion and sonority. One of the typical music that Media Aetas performs is the “tarantella”. This kind of music, probably originating from the Middle East, was used to cure the victims of the poisonous bite of the Tarantola (a spider). The victims thanks to the music would fall into a kind of “trance” and dance until the poison would be exhausted from their bodies. The dance originally performed with a violin, a guitar and a “tamorra” could also last for more than a day.
The name “Catubba” originates from a Middle Eastern rhythm cited also in the famous opera by G. Rossini “An Italian in Algiers”.
