Federer, why do all good things come to an end?

Among all tennis players that I admire, Roger Federer is the best player in the history of the game, I always thought that Pete Sampras was the best, but personally I believe that Federer has better skills, but of course Pete Sampras is a great a player and he was my favorite in the past. Other players that I cheered for where Steffi Graff, Martina Hingis, Justine Henin, Maria Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic, Novak Djokovic and Andre Agassi. But of course on top of them is Federer.

If you watch Federer playing, you will definitely notice how smart he is, I’ve never seen someone playing like him, the way he puts the ball on the line, the incredible back-hand shot that drives the opponent outside the field, not to mention the great aces. One can tell that his skills, his mind, and his amazing attitude are the reason that he ruled tennis for more than 4 years, being number one for 4 consecutive years is something that no one could achieve more than half of it.

Out of the 4 Grand Slam tournaments, Federer failed just like Sampras to win the Roland Garros, my personal favorite championship, when he announced that he hired a coach that specializes in clay fields I though it could be a good idea but I was afraid that he loses his outstanding performance on the rest of fields, and I’m not sure if this is what happened.

Unfortunately all good thing will eventually come to an end, this year wasn’t quite the good year for the this glittering star, throughout 2008 he couldn’t win any major title, not the Australian Open, nor the Roland Garros or Wimbledon, which I took for granted.

Tennis is all about concentration, if you lost it for a microsecond you lose the ball, and I guess this is what is happening to Federer, he is not focusing on the game, and so his results were really disappointing this year, but the good part is that he still got it, he still has his magic, he still shoots great shots, but he can’t focus, and so he isn’t able to win.

Now he is losing the number one ranking, which he kept for 4 years in row, to the player that I really hate, Nadal, I don’t know why but I really hate him, he looks so mean, he plays a lot of mind games, and what is worse is that he kills the game, the more the ball remains in play the better, the best part to of a tennis match is the rally, but then Nadal wastes like 15 seconds before he serves, I don’t really care if that’s legal, but it shouldn’t be more than 4 seconds, let the game be more vibrant, faster, more continues.

At the end, Federer will remain the best, even if he lost, and I don’t think I will enjoy tennis knowing that Nadal is number one, I just can’t. And the question remains, will Federer end up like Hingis? I hope no.

  1. I hope he can over take Sampras in his record of 14 grand slams and win the French open at least once in his career because he deserves it! I think as it stands, he is the greatest tennis player ever! The guy is class!

  2. I agree with you Stephen! I hope so.

  3. Nadal is the best… although i like fed as well…
    but Nadal is a miracle

  4. Federer is just not winning; I think part of it has to do with that big Wimbledon loss. I am thinking that loss put brakes on his flow and really messed things up for him. The way he talks in interview about Wimbledon still says that he has a lot on his mind about that match, what could be, what was better, what was not etc. Nadal has played great tennis this year; his results show that, but when Federer plays, he just gels (if you can get the idea); i just feel that if he gets back his groove, leave Pete’s record, he will have 4 grand slams in an year. If he could just get Nadal on clay (Roland Garros), which is possible IMHO.

You’ve made an interesting point that Federer might be going in the wrong direction because he’s practicing for Roland Garros, I don’t agree. This is because (and I might be wrong about this), but Clay courts in fact require more foot work than grass or any hard courts because of variable points, off course there are things that you have to adjust but so is true for other surfaces, like for example Hard courts are waaay much faster than grass or any surface for that matter, and they are hard on the body to play too.

Although I do believe that Federer needs just a couple of matches or a slam win to get his confidence back, and I am thinking he can only get it back by beating Nadal convincingly at either Wimbledon or French Open. This has got more to do with that jinx that Federer has gotten lately … like ok so Nadal is the ONLY guy who can beat me or give me a hard time. Once you get that inside you, you are beaten right there. As they if you blv so, it’ll happen.

I am a Federer fan and i never could just like Pete Personally. He was a great Champion but still Federer is Federer; I just think that if he focuses he can achieve waaay much than he currently has. Thats natural talent for you right there.

  5. Thank you Vyas for the great comment, I agree, the Wimbledon loss was a really hard one cause as I said personally I took it for granted, I guess everybody did. But anyway I hope Federer will shine again, I hope.

  6. People, take it easy. We all know that 2008 is not a good year for Federer yet, but still we have 2 major tournaments left. The first is the Olympics and then the US Open. I Hope he does well and wins both of them.

Secondly, we know he is not winning tournaments, but let me remind you that he reached the semis in the Australian Open, and also reached the finals in both the other 2 (Roland Garros and Wimbledon) grand slams this year. To reach the finals is not an easy job guys! It was just not his day I guess. You cannot expect some one to win all the matches he play. It is tough at times, and that is also againest the other best player in the world. I hate Nadal too for some reason, but he is a very quick on the field. We know he could not do well in the Roland Garros final, which he lost 3 sets to 0, but he came back very well in the Wimbledon from 2 sets to love down, which was he greatest and the longest final in the history of the Wimbledon. We can only say that is he not performing well, if he was knocked out of the grand slam in the first or second round, but he reached the finals 2 times.

We all should wish him all the best in the future. I hope and also pray that he wins the Olmpics Gold Medal, as well as the US Open, to make him and his fans happy, and ends 2008 in a great style. Also, its his birthday today, so wish him luck. I hope he remains the best ever tennis player till the time he plays. God bless you Roger.

  7. Thank you Tanveer for your comment, however considering reaching the final match a great achievement is something that suits normal players, not a great one like Federer, I know it’s not easy, I know it takes a lot of efforts, but Federer is way passed this.

Anyway I wish him all the best, and I hope that he wins the Olympics, and the US Open, and all the coming tournaments.

Happy Birthday Roger, and Good Luck!

  8. Samer, I think you are also right with your point of view, but I think there is alot of Federer left. He is just not finished. He is great player, and there are always some bad patches in life, and Federer is just going through it. 2008 is the worst year of his career, but I believe he is still too young, and we will see the same old Federer back very very soon.

It was great to see him carrying the Swiss flag in the opening of the Olympics yesterday. We wish you all the best!
