The Russian Film Week kicks off today in Amman

The Russian Embassy in Jordan is in inviting you to the Russian Film Week that will take place between Sat 7 - Thu 12 of February 2009, screening will at 7 pm at Al-Hussein Cultural Center - Ras Al Ain. All movies will be in Russian with Arabic subtitles, check the schedule below. For more details contact the Royal Film Commission on +962 6 464 22 66 (ext. 23).

Sat 7/2: Bless the Woman by Stanislav Govorukhin, Drama, 114 minutes, 2003.

“Vera” a married woman in her mid-thirties follows her husband from one fort to another. The couple undergoes challenging situations, and “Vera” tries to create a homely atmosphere for her house. Vera is frustrated and hopes that her husband recovers from all the difficulties he had faced as a soldier during the Second World War. She only finds peace and happiness after she returns to her beloved city in Southern Russia overlooking the sea.

The film has won several international awards, including the Silver Pyramid Award at Cairo International Film Festival in 2004.

Sun 8/2: Four Taxi Drivers and a Dog by Fedor Popov, 99 minutes, Comedy, 2004.

The film tells the story of Figaro, a small dog, that is sent to a veterinary clinic to be killed for it is weak and sick. It accidentally arrives at a taxi station and the dog turns the employees’ lives upside down. Four taxi drivers take care of “Figaro” and find themselves involved in dangerous adventures with the fearless dog.

Mon 9/2: The Italian by Andrei Romanov, 99 minutes, Fiction, 2005.

“Vania” is a six-year old orphan, recently adopted by a family living in Italy. His new life is about to begin, but he feels the urge to know about his past first, and decides to look for his mother. He discovers a world filled with corrupted policemen and greedy bureaucrats, for whom adopting foreign children is merely a great source of income. Unlike other children of his age, “Vania” takes his responsibilities and makes his own decisions.

The film has won several international prizes including the Best Feature Award at Berlin International Festival in 2005.

Wed 11/2: About Love in any Weather by Alla Surikova, 95 minutes, Comedy, 2004.

A young journalist comes from Moscow to start her career and meets a young but poor man “Peryshkin”. She falls in love with him when she realizes how different he is from other reckless men in town. Their relationship develops and she is ready to do anything for him including saving him from prison.

Thu 12/2: The Last Weekend by Pavel Sanaev, 86 minutes, Fiction, 2005.

“Savage” a former criminal, decides to send his only brother “Mischa” to study in the United States. His friends throw a farewell party but “Mischa” is killed by accident. They find themselves in a predicament and fear his brother’s vengeance. The friends attempt to get rid of the corpse by burning it in the outskirts of the city and hope that this will not be their last weekend.
